Kama Sutra Art of India
The Kama Sutra holds a special place in the study of sexuality, if for no other reason than its enduring popularity.
While the Kama Sutra is not a pure sacred sex scripture
(for more, read the Kama Sutra Introduction
in our Text Archive), it is valuable as a model for open attitudes toward sex.
Indeed, perhaps the greatest contribution of the Kama Sutra is not what it says - because it is in places outdated and
non-supportive of gender equality - but rather that it speaks openly about sex in an educational way at all.
This approach fosters learning, discussion, and progress in the field of sexuality, and opens the door for exploring
the sacred potential of sex. Certainly an environment where sex can be freely explored
as a means to personal and spiritual growth is healthy for society.
The appeal of the Kama Sutra's open attitude toward sex is evident by its prevalent appearance as a subject in books,
film - such as the one by that name featured in this gallery - and of course, art.
