Ancient Stone Goddess Art
The next two galleries feature stone sculpture dating from 10-30,000 yrs ago.
Called 'venus figurines' by archeologists, this art grew out of
reverence for the feminine mysteries of pregnancy, childbirth, monthly cycle, and fruitfulness of
mother earth. Note the matronly emphasis in the figures, honoring the mother goddess.
These artifacts were found spread across what is now Europe & Russia, including the well-known Venuses of
Willendorf (Austria), Laussel and Lespugne (France), and Çatal-hüyük (Turkey).
