African Goddess Art
This gallery features modern interpretations of African women and goddesses,
including 'Orishas' (nature spirits) of the Yoruba religion of West Africa.
Among them are Oshun, goddess of love, and Yemaya, featured in the right-hand thumbnails.
Yemaya is the ocean goddess, and as all life originated in the waters, she is a maternal deity for all.
Many Yoruban Orishas came to the New World with the African diaspora, and are popular throughout the
Caribbean, Brazil, and other parts of South America.
The first two paintings are by Francisco Santos.
The three named images are creations of and ©
Thalia Took.
The first two Yemaya images are © Joanna Powell Colbert and Maria Giulia Alemanno, respectively.
